About us
From the Damvallei to Asanti Wellness
Asanti Wellness is located in a place with a rich history. Where the Kristalbad outdoor pool once bustled with summer activity, there is now an oasis of calm. Since 2009, Asanti has offered not only thermal facilities, but also a restaurant and massage salon, overlooking the natural beauty of the old bend of the River Scheldt.
The Damvallei
In 1928, Louis Mortier purchased several plots of land and built a café on one of them, the “Damvallei.” He wanted to give the café a name connected to the region. “Damslootvallei” seemed too long, so he shortened it to “Damvallei.” Here, the word “vallei” (valley) refers to the long, alluvial-soil loop of the former bend of the Scheldt River.
The Kristalbad
In 1938–1939, next to the “Damvallei” café, the “Kristalbad” outdoor swimming pool was built, complete with a play area and summer cottages. Especially during the war, it became a favourite spot for young and old alike, and on beautiful summer days the pool welcomed between 1,000 and 1,200 visitors. Today’s outdoor and indoor pools at Asanti Wellness are remnants of the former open-air pool.
Thermen Asanti
In 2006, Thermen Asanti opened its doors as a wellness complex with saunas, a hammam, and both indoor and outdoor facilities. The domain quickly became known for its peaceful location and natural surroundings.
Expansion
In October 2009, additional saunas and relaxation zones were added, including a panoramic sauna, an outdoor pool, a massage salon, and a restaurant with views over the old meanders of the Scheldt. Asanti grew in popularity among wellness lovers from East Flanders.
Asanti Wellness
In October 2023, Lieven took over the management of Asanti and renamed the complex “Asanti Wellness” with a clear mission: to breathe new life into this unique place and develop it into the most peaceful wellness in Ghent and the surrounding area. With respect for its original character, he aims to restore Asanti to its former glory and, step by step, transform it into an oasis of silence, nature, and deep relaxation. His vision focuses on a warm, calming interior and a rich range of experiences and rituals that bring body and mind into balance.
